About Amed

Amed is a coastal region located on the eastern coast of Bali, Indonesia, in the Karangasem Regency. It is not a single village but a string of several traditional fishing villages and bays, including Amed, Jemeluk, and Lipah. The area is notably situated in the shadow of Mount Agung, Bali's highest and most sacred volcano. It is geographically and culturally notable for its dramatic black sand beaches, a result of the region's volcanic geology, and its transition from a quiet fishing area to a destination known for world-class snorkeling and diving on the nearby coral reefs.

Basic information

The villages of the Amed area were naturally formed over centuries by local Balinese communities. There is no single founding date. Key structural features are traditional Balinese compounds and small, locally-owned warung (shops) and guesthouses built with simple materials. The area does not have a specific protected legal status, though the adjacent coral reefs are part of the marine ecosystem. Its current primary purpose is a blend of traditional salt production and fishing, alongside a growing focus on tourism, particularly catering to divers and travelers seeking a quieter coastal experience compared to southern Bali.

Location

The nearest major city and primary international transit point is Denpasar, approximately a two to three-hour drive to the southwest. The main access road is a coastal route that is paved but can be narrow and winding in sections. Tourist infrastructure is developed but remains low-key, consisting of small hotels, dive shops, and restaurants lining the main road and beachfront. There are no major information centers; services are provided by individual businesses. Accessibility is generally good year-round, though the journey can be lengthy. Road conditions can be challenging for larger vehicles on some smaller side roads accessing specific bays.

Nature

The landscape is arid and rugged, characterized by rolling hills descending sharply into a series of bays with distinctive black volcanic sand beaches. The climate is generally hot and dry, influenced by the rain shadow of Mount Agung. Vegetation consists of drought-resistant shrubs and trees. The most significant natural feature is the coral reef system that lies just offshore, which is rich in marine biodiversity, including many species of tropical fish. The underwater topography features coral walls and a sunken Japanese shipwreck that acts as an artificial reef. Human influence is evident through fishing and tourism, but the natural marine environment remains the primary attraction and is relatively well-preserved.

Story

The Amed area has historically been inhabited by traditional Balinese communities whose livelihoods were based on fishing and salt production, a practice that continues today using age-old evaporation techniques. For most of its history, it remained an isolated and impoverished region due to its remote location and arid land, unsuitable for extensive rice cultivation. Its modern history began to change in the late 20th century when scuba divers and independent travelers discovered its pristine underwater ecosystems and tranquil setting. This led to a gradual development of tourism infrastructure, transforming it from a purely subsistence-based economy to one that incorporates hospitality while retaining its strong cultural identity.
